That doesn’t change the fact that even we are AI culprits who use programs to organize our thoughts and files. Well… as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, streaming services, and digital storage continue to grow, so does the demand for data centers. These massive facilities house thousands of computer servers that power much of our modern digital world. And for a while, they haven’t been controversial. But… then came AI – a force that requires MUCH more computing and data.


While they can bring construction jobs, tax revenue, and technological investment to a region, they have also become increasingly challenging, particularly in desert communities throughout the American Southwest.
The primary concern is water.
And jobs – for all the jobs that they temporarily create to build the centers, data centers that encourage more AI and computing are destroying entire industries.
Although many people imagine data centers as simply large buildings full of computers (ever seen Switch in Las Vegas?), those computers generate significant heat and must be cooled continuously. Depending on their design, some facilities can consume millions of gallons of water annually. In regions where water resources are already limited, residents often question whether scarce water supplies should be allocated to technology infrastructure rather than future residential, agricultural, or economic needs.


What else? Data centers require enormous amounts of electricity to operate around the clock. Communities like ours must consider whether local power grids can support these facilities and what impact increased energy demand may have on rates, infrastructure, and long-term sustainability.
Supporters argue that modern data centers are becoming more efficient, utilizing recycled water systems, renewable energy sources, and advanced cooling technologies. Sure, they are. These folks also point out that data centers often generate substantial property tax revenues while requiring relatively few public services compared to other types of development. Sure, that too. But, when was the last time your property taxes were more important than your drinking water?
For communities like Pahrump and others throughout the desert Southwest, the debate is not necessarily about whether technology is good or bad. We love technology. We’re typing this… on technology. Still, it is about balancing economic opportunity with responsible stewardship of limited natural resources.
As Nevada continues to attract technology investment, local leaders and residents will likely face important decisions about how growth should occur and what role data centers may play in the future of our communities.
